CPS Immersion Project: Medellin
Medellin, Colombia
Social Urbanism and Revitalization
For decades, Medellín was internationally known for violence and inequality. But in recent years, the city has become a global model of transformation through “social urbanism," an approach that combines innovative architecture, public transportation, and community participation to foster inclusion and revitalization.
This project will focus on urban transformation and the role of social urbanism in shaping more equitable cities. Participants will meet with local NGOs, community leaders, and faculty from Universidad EAFIT to learn how grassroots initiatives and municipal projects have changed public space, access, and opportunity. The group will explore iconic examples of Medellín’s revitalization, such as the cable cars connecting hillside neighborhoods, the green corridors, and cultural centers that anchor communities. Participants will visit Comuna 13’s graffiti and arts movement, the Casade la Memoria museum, and community driven development projects that highlight Medellín’s ongoing challenges and successes. With more than 2.5 million people, Medellín offers a powerful example of innovation, inviting participants to consider how social urbanism might inspire efforts in cities around the world.
