Humans of Gettysburg: Men’s Soccer Head Coach Dan Malone
From student-athlete to head coach, Dan Malone has turned a passion for soccer into a commitment to helping Gettysburg student-athletes grow, compete, and thrive on and off the field.
When Dan Malone was named head men’s soccer coach in December 2025 after serving as Gettysburg College’s interim head coach in the fall, he fulfilled something he had dreamed of since the beginning of his coaching journey as a volunteer student assistant nearly a decade prior.
Originally born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in New Hampshire, Malone played two years of soccer at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine before moving into a student volunteer assistant role. After graduating with a degree in history, he opted to continue coaching rather than pursuing a teaching career. Looking back at that decision, Malone recalled falling in love with the idea of representing a collegiate program and institution.
During Malone’s time at St. Joseph’s, the program posted three straight conference championships and NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Success followed Malone to Pennsylvania where he joined the coaching staff at the University of Scranton and led the Royals to the Landmark Conference crown in 2022.
Malone joined the Gettysburg College men’s soccer team as an assistant coach in the fall of 2024. “I was very happy and growing in Scranton, but the opportunity to learn from Mark [Mettrick] and work at an institution that strives for an exceptional student-athlete experience while competing on a national level was something I couldn’t pass up.”
Dan Malone enjoys mountain hiking and returning to his roots in New England in the offseason.
In his first season at the helm, Malone guided the Bullets to their first 10-win season since 2021 and an appearance in the Centennial Conference semifinals.
Beyond the soccer field, Malone enjoys returning to his New England roots, visiting family, roaming mountain trails, and playing golf. You can often find him at other athletic events at Gettysburg, showing the same kind of support and encouragement for his colleagues that has fueled his decade-long coaching dream.
“I want to continue to evolve as a coach, mentor, and educator to be the best resource possible for our student athletes, while giving them the confidence to grow alongside me and experience everything that Gettysburg has to offer," said Malone.
